Shooting spree suspect appeared to target law enforcement

While Evansville Police originally thought the bystander killed during an active shooter situation Friday was shot at random, investigators now believe suspect Barry Freeman saw the man walking to a neighbor’s house and thought he was law enforcement.

Evansville Police Department released surveillance and body camera footage Tuesday of a man identified as Freeman firing an AR-15 and later a shotgun at Evansville and Vanderburgh County squad cars.

Freeman was shot twice in the chest by city police detective Kyle Thiry about an hour after police arrived on-scene, according to the department. Freeman, 51, died Sunday night at a local hospital.
