36 75 years ago today: Russians halt German advance at Kursk
In what is considered the greatest clash of armor in military history, the Germans attack the Russian fortification at Kursk, a Russian railway and industrial center, and are stopped in a devastating battle, marking the turning point in the Eastern front in the Russians’ favor. One thousand tanks and a thousand aircraft on each side clashed on a two-mile front, fighting each other to a standstill. Losses were huge, and Hitler never again launched an offensive in the East. Hitler, hearing that the Allies had landed in Sicily, ordered a withdrawal. The Soviet march west had begun.
