'One seriously injured' in blaze on roof of Trump Tower

Two people were injured as New York firefighters tackled a small blaze on the roof of Trump Tower. According to the Fire Department, one person sustained serious, possibly life-threatening injuries. The New York Times reports a firefighter was hit by falling debris and an engineer inhaled smoke, but refused medical attention.

The fire was reported shortly after 7am local time. Smoke could be seen billowing from the rooftop of the building, which houses a penthouse condominium owned by the US president and the headquarters of the Trump Organization.

His son Eric, who is the group's executive vice president, tweeted to say the fire was in a cooling tower on the roof. He praised the Fire Department’s quick response and professionalism.

The tower reportedly has two roofs. Mechanical equipment is housed on the lower roof and a higher one covers it. An official with the FDNY said there was no fire actually inside the building.

President Donald Trump had returned to the White House on Sunday (January 7) following a weekend at Camp David.
